Taking our first steps in 2025/6
Phoenix Opera are a group of opera enthusiasts based in West Kent who run get-togethers several times a year for people to do some operatic singing and have a glass of wine (or a cup of tea, of course). At some stage, we may even put on a show...
We will cover a range of repertoire, including light opera and 'serious stuff' in scenarios ranging from all-day workshops to evening sing-throughs of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. Sometimes we invite guest soloists and there are always opportunities for participants to have a go at singing solo roles, so we cater to a wide range of tastes.
You don't have to be a trained singer, although some experience sight-singing will definitely help.

Why come along?
It's widely known that singing with others is one of the most uplifting exercises you can do. And singing opera just takes things to another level - not just are you singing great music, you're telling fantastic stories.
You will discover new repertoire and sing some classics in a sociable environment.
How do I get involved?
All you need to do is email us on phoenixoperacompany@gmail.com to let us know that you want to attend, just so we have an idea of numbers.
What are your plans?
Our 2026 is planned to include the following:
Sing-through of Gilbert and Sullivan's 'Iolanthe' - Saturday 7th March
Dido & Aeneas day-long workshop - Saturday 20th June
Classical cabaret/showcase evening - Thursday 24th September
Sing-through of Handel's 'Messiah' - TBC
Next event: 'Dido & Aeneas' day workshop on 20th June
For this event we will provide scores, or you are welcome to bring your own if you have one.
As this is a one-day event, it will be helpful to be familiar with the music in advance. We suggest listening to a recording on either Spotify or Youtube
The cost for the day will be £40 to those singing solo roles and £30 to chorus and payment can be made by cash, card or bank transfer.
We will be doing a performance in the evening so family and friends are very welcome to come along and watch - it won't be a formal ticketed performance, but an opportunity to share what we have been doing.
Would you like to sing a solo role?
We will need people to cover the solo numbers and are keen to, in keeping with the ethos of what we are doing, let people have a go so if there is a role you would like to sing, please email us and let us know. We will allocate roles in advance depending on coverage.

About Us
After a combined 15 years of singing in the choruses of other local groups, we thought we'd have a go at setting up something a bit different, with at least as much emphasis on the social side of singing as on the performing side.
Phoenix Opera is founded with the aim of making opera fun and accessible, giving people the chance to try things they wouldn't be able to elsewhere and to do it in a relaxed and informal environment while aiming high.
We welcome people with a range of different abilities and the different events we put on will cater to different tastes and levels.
Do we know what we're doing? Not entirely. Will it be interesting? Hopefully. Will it be fun? Yes.
If you like our vision, come and get involved!
